Itinerary:

A rigorous and rewarding high-altitude passage that climbs through shifting ecosystems to reach the legendary “Skeleton Lake” at the feet of the Great Himalayan peaks.

Your journey begins with a long, scenic transit from Kathgodam. As the vehicle winds through the Kumaon hills, the air grows thinner and the peaks sharper. You’ll pass the confluence of the Pindar River before arriving at Lohajung ($7,600$ ft). This evening is spent in a mountain lodge, checking your gear and acclimatizing to the first taste of high-altitude air.

Leaving the road-head behind, you descend toward the Neel Ganga. After crossing a suspension bridge, the trail pivots into a steep climb through a dense canopy of rhododendron and oak. The scent of damp earth and pine accompanies you until the forest breaks into the terraced fields of Didna Village ($8,000$ ft). Overnight stay in a traditional local homestay.

Prepare for a steep, rewarding ascent toward the timberline. As the trees thin out, you emerge onto the vast, velvet-green expanse of Ali Bugyal ($11,000$ ft). The sudden openness is breathtaking; you are now walking on one of the highest meadows in the world, with the peaks of the Garhwal range seemingly within arm’s reach.

Today is a majestic ridge walk. You will cross over to Bedni Bugyal, a site of immense spiritual significance for the locals. The trail then curves toward Patar Nachauni ($12,700$ ft). The greenery begins to fade, replaced by rugged rocks and low-lying shrubs. This is a critical night for acclimatization as you cross the $12,000$-foot mark.

The terrain turns alpine and stark. A zig-zagging climb leads you to Kalu Vinayak, a small temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha that marks the entry into the high-altitude zone. From here, the trail levels out over a rocky path to Bhagwabasa ($14,100$ ft). You will camp in a lunar-like landscape, surrounded by glaciers and the biting cold of the inner Himalayas.

An alpine start (3:00 AM) is essential. Navigating through snow and sharp inclines, you reach the legendary Roopkund Lake ($15,750$ ft) by dawn. After witnessing the mysterious skeletons, a further $250$-foot steep scramble takes you to Junargali Ridge for a face-to-face view of Mt. Trishul. You then begin the long descent back to the safety of Patar Nachauni.

Retrace your steps through the meadows, descending rapidly into the warmer forest zones. Reaching Lohajung by midday, you’ll board your vehicle for the return drive to Kathgodam. As the mountains recede into the distance, you carry back the silence of the glaciers and the secrets of the Skeleton Lake.
